Fortran Coarray Implementation of Semi-Lagrangian Convected Air Particles within an Atmospheric Model

This work added semi-Lagrangian convected air particles to the Intermediate Complexity Atmospheric Research (ICAR) model. The ICAR model is a simplified atmospheric using quasi-dynamical downscaling gain performance over more traditional models. uses Fortran coarrays split domain amongst images and handle halo region communication of image’s boundary regions. newly implemented use trilinear interpolation compute initial properties from Eulerian calculate humidity buoyancy forces as runs. paper investigated cost scaling attributes executing unsaturated saturated versus original particle-less An in-depth analysis was done on patterns particles, well variety conditions such wind speed saturation mixing ratios. study found that given linear increase in number communicated, there an decrease performance, but it then levels out, indicating runtime model, particle communication, computational benefits quickly offset it. provided insight into processors required amortize additional particles.
